I am so glad I subscribed to Dr. Patrick’s podcasts. This sounds great and as a breast cancer survivor (from 2003 – 13 years now) I am definitely doing this. Thank you for this work. I have a question: Would eating 1 gram of xylitol mints after 8pm break the fast period?

I use xylitol mints – 1 gram of 100% xylitol (1gram of carb) for my oral health. Now that I am trying out TRF, I only take the xylitol mints between 9 a and 8 p. I miss my night-time mints. I’ve used these mints 6 to 8 times per day for 6 years and have had no cavities or caries in that period – none. I like to eat 2 just before bed and 2 in the middle of the night when I go to the bathroom – I heard women have more acid mouths and want to ensure my mouth remains alkaline.

What benefits of fasting do you loose if you drink coffee or tea during the fasting hours? This is the first time I hear about any non-water beverage affecting the fasted state and it makes sense since the liver needs to process the caffeine. I have been doing intermitent fasting daily for more than one year, eating in 8 hour window. I was hoever drinking coffee and tea. After this podcast i started to do water only for 16 hours. I am curious what benefits I lost for one year…
